Who we are
St. Luke’s Mission Hospital – Mpanshya is situated in Rufunsa District – Zambia since 1964. Originally it was a Jesuit Mission Hospital run by Canadian Nuns. In 1978 Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo ( Polish Branch ) became the managing agency and over the years have created an oasis of hope, care and love for the sick and the poor. The Sisters habe revived and expanded St. Lukes to become a well-staffed and equipped Hospital.
Inspired by their patron, St. Charles Borromeo, also known as the Apostle of Charity, Sisters of Mercy have been successful in reviving the Mission. The Hospital is growing and Not only does it serve a vast area with a radius of approximately 200 km but also receives patients from Lusaka’s hospitals resulting in a growing number of patients coming to Mpanshya all the way from the country’s capital.
Hospital has a Hospital Affiliated Health Center with the catchment area of 4436. What once was just a Hospital has grown into several different buildings, including the Hospice, Nutrition Centre, Nursing School and Noah’s Ark–a cultural and educational place where for the first time in May of 2000 a preschool programme was introduced.
Through the work of the Hospital, its institutions and community programmes, we now have years of experience of taking care of the sick and poor in the Luangwa Valley area. We know the culture, local language and topography. We have excellent relationships with the local government and community leaders. The reputation of St. Luke’s extends far beyond the conventional provincial boundaries.
