Speech Of Sr Martha
Good Morning. I am very pleased to welcome you all and Join St Luke’ Mission Hospital in celebration 60 years of existence under the theme “ST LUKES @ 60, SIXTY DECADES OF QUALITY HEALTH CARE AND DEDICATED SERVICE, WE TREAT JESUS HEALS.”.
Let me first begin by thanking God for giving us this opportunity to see this day, it is by His grace and not our doing for we are just instruments the hands of Lords.
Secondary, thanking St Luke’s Mission Hospital management and staff both past and present for their continued service to the community and its contributions to the healthcare sector in Rufunsa District and Zambia at large, over the past 60 years.
The hospital was established in 1963 and was founded in 1964 as a Jesuit Mission Hospital run by Canadian nuns. In 1978, the Polish Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo have been the managing agency of the Archdiocese of Lusaka.
The main objectives of the hospital have always been to provide quality equitable health care services that is cost effective and meet pre-established standards.
The Hospital catchment population is estimated at 79121. This comprise of the Hospital Affiliated Health Centre and the surrounding health centres and health post in District of Rufunsa.
Over the years the Hospital has expanded its services. in the early 2000 the facility saw the introduction HIV/AIDS services with palliative care services being provided in the hospice. In recent times we have seen major improvement in the services provided with introduction of VMMC, Cervical cancer screening, Adolescent health services, Men’s Clinic and NCD screening through the community CBV’s. These services have increased accessibility of healthcare to all. Visa vie the Hospital continues to provide emergency services, Out-patient and in-patient services and Maternal and Child Health services just to mention just a few.
Consequently, the hospital infrastructure and services offered has grown. We have seen construction of the Hospital Chapel, Physiotherapy, high cost, expansion of Lab, Delivery and postnatal ward, improvement of the radiology department. Currently the High Dependence Unit (HDU) is almost completed.
Despite all these achievement, the hospital continues to experience major shortages in its staffing level. For example, the hospital records an average of 50 babies in a month / 8 Midwives, Radiology staff, Laboratory Clinical Officers and Medical Officers.
Furthermore, the ambulances services are affected by non-availability of a fully furnished ambulance. This has been compounded by frequent break down of the available ambulance 3 at station, but they all need high mentanace for them to be functional.
Partners – To all our partners, we say thank you GRZ, CHAZ, CRS, LPHO, CIDRZ, FUFO, SOLIDAR INVEST/ UBUNTHU HOMES just to mention a few, thank you for you have made our work easier buy providing what we need whenever we ask for you help and assistance.
For WE only TREAT JESUS HEALS. Welcome and enjoy the celebration
